We’re BACK!

Posted on March 23rd, 2007 by Justine-Marie in Announcements

Hello!
If anyone is still out there reading this, WE’RE BACK!

Approximately 5 months ago, our server was shut down due to a situation out of our control. As a non-profit group run by college students with no money and a lot of homework, getting everything set up with a new server, getting control of our domain, retrieving our old files, and finding great people to help us out… well, it’s been hectic and difficult!

But ignore all that. We’re looking to swing back into gear right away! Friends, please contact Justine at stinie@gmail.com so we can get started publishing new material as soon as possible.

As a side note, this month marks our two year anniversary. Let’s not ever let there be a stoppage of great all-ages coverage ever again. Since we’ve been gone, a lot has happened, and all-ages music is just as vital and important as ever!

We Love The Hype Machine, but…

Posted on September 6th, 2006 by Justine-Marie in Announcements

it definitely generates not just hype, but rumors, too! For everyone who follows The Hype Machine like we do, you may have seen a “new track from the Postal Service” listed as one of the hot new songs. This is definitey a hoax! Sarah Moody of SubPop Records (The Postal Service’s record label) says,

Oh lordy, don’t believe one word of that thing. Not only is that track most assuredly not the Postal Service, but we don’t even have a release date set for that album yet! So someone is pulling that blogger’s e-leg, though I’m not sure who.. either way it’s pretty good publicity for whoever the imitation band is, I guess. I love how much fact checking went into that piece before he posted that “exclusive”.. ;)

Sorry, guys, we’ll just have to wait!

Update: So I followed the track to the IRC channel where...

Where We’re Going to be at Bumbershoot

Posted on September 1st, 2006 by Various Writers in Announcements

bb

So the title says it all. These are the places where Justine and Tristan will be during Bumbershoot. If you want to come say hi, hang out, offer compliments and accolades, e-mail editors@mercurialsound.com and we’re more than willing to meet. We’re also more than willing to wax poetic about Spoon. Tristan will be acting hip-hop much of the time, but he also thinks perhaps Spoon might be a hip-hop group. Many other Mercsound writers will be amongst the crowds all weekend - you can’t even tell who they are.

SATURDAY
Justine:
12:15-1:15 The Lonely Forest/EMP Skychurch
The Lonely Forest will be returning to the stage where they took first place in the EMP SoundOff! in February to start off my Bumbershoot weekend with their passionate, image-filled pop-rock that gets me crying and dancing within the...

SS Marie Antoinette Music Shut Down

Posted on August 14th, 2006 by Various Writers in Announcements

From the SS Marie’s Myspace:

We no longer host music, or provide bands with an all-ages forum. After one year, hundreds of bands, thousands of awsome people supporting said bands, We must throw in the towel. We had a great run, & will continiue to host visual art shows without discrimination. It must be said that the desicion to stop hosting music was not made by us, or the city of Seattle. It was made by a band called “Impending Doom” who decided to set off a handfull of M-80’s in the parking lot across from us. The police were alerted of possible gunfire. Not the smartest thing to do…

The delicate balance of an underground venue needs less than 1 police unit to be shut down for good; we got 3. We (the DIY community of seattle) know this and have kept the SSMA afloat through the roughest of storms. But The lack of respect by a few individuals ruinined the work of hundreds...

Hip-Hop Big at Bumbershoot

Posted on July 10th, 2006 by Tristan in Announcements, Spiels

On the Common Market track, “Connect For,” rapper Ra Scion urges members of the Seattle hip-hop scene to band together. He feels that a connection between local rappers will help prove to the city and nation that Seattle is a hip-hop town. Now, with the release of the complete Bumbershoot 2006 lineup Ra Scion’s dream may be a reality. Bumbershoot might just unintentionally be the biggest hip-hop concert of the summer.

Hip-hop acts for 2006 include: Abyssinian Creole, Atmosphere, Blue Scholars, Cancer Rising, Common Market, Macklemore, The Saturday Knights, A Tribe Called Quest, and Kanye West.

While local hip-hop was well-represented at Bumbershoot 2005, the lineup was nowhere near as impressive as the group that One Reel has unveiled for this year. National acts like Common and Talib Kweli were both exciting but can’t be compared to a reunited Tribe Called Quest or a worldwide superstar like Kanye West. 2005 also saw many local acts draw massive...

Bumbershoot Tickets

Posted on July 6th, 2006 by Justine-Marie in Announcements

So… I bought my Bumbershoot ticket today, and I just wanted to make sure everyone knows that tickets are WAY cheaper if you buy them before the 14th. This is the pre-Sale - you get 38% off a 3-day pass. You have to register for a “BumberFan” club to get in the presale, but it’s probably worth it… after the 14th, a 3-day pass goes from $50 to $70, and then the weekend of a 3-day pass is $80! Anyways, go here to get your tickets if you’re planning on going (which you should be).

Jeremy Enigk - 6/28 @ Neumo’s

Posted on July 2nd, 2006 by Reece in Announcements

Yes he’s back. Back again. But not like that…It’s been 10 years since we’ve heard new solo material from Jeremy Enigk, not to slight The Fire Theft, his project of 2003, of proper recognition, but we’ve all really been looking forward to that day when we could add a new piece of work to the shelf right next to Return of the Frog Queen. Sure we had The United States of Leland clips but those were all obscured by sounds from the movie. But back to the point, judging by the sounds of last Wednesday, World Waits, out October 17th, is going to be one for the record books.
Thinking that the show might be close to sold out, I dropped by Neumos early to grab a ticket. Crossing the street I heard…no…it couldn’t be…wait a second, rushing to the door, I found my ears weren’t deceiving me as there sat Jeremy belting out those falsetto...

Announcement for June

Posted on June 30th, 2006 by Various Writers in Announcements

Hello! It’s announcement time!

Things are good. We are all busy. Summer Jobs, summer trips, etc. As usual, we are asking for more help! If you would like to help with the CALENDAR, please send in an email to editors at mercurialsound.com. It’s not much work at all - you can take on as little or as much as you would like. If you would like to write, take photographs, etc, please also let us know!

The show? The soon to come, AMAZING, rocking, best show ever, mercurialsound first CONCERT? It’s been rescheduled. So… you’ll hear about it later.

As is getting popular lately (and we’re big fans of the practice ourselves) the Old Firehouse has released a compilation CD of music recorded at the firehouse itself. If you don’t live out toward Redmond, the firehouse is one of the oldest Always All Ages venues like… ever. Vera’s neat, but Redmond Firehouse has them beat when it comes to age. Here’s a nice quote from...

New Music: Love You Tigers - Myspace page

Posted on June 14th, 2006 by Tristan in Announcements

Go Here! Do it!
You’ve never heard of the Love You Tigers. I can almost guarantee that. Just take a look at the page views from their Myspace page: 542 as of right now. If they were from Seattle I wouldn’t be as confident, but even the biggest anglophile could not have heard of this unsigned one-man-band from the UK. I’m not joking: look on a site that searches Mp3 blogs and see if you find them. I have. And you won’t. Despite the lack of audience, or perhaps because of the lack of audience they are now the most exciting band to come from the United Kingdom for quite some time.

Love You Tigers is the brainchild of musician Ben Johnson, formerly a group consisting of two tiger lovers. The lore of Love You Tigers involves a musical disagreement that resulted in second...
