hutch1jpg.JPGWe caught up with Hutch from the Thermals after their performance at Bumbershoot this year, and had a chance to chat about their newest album, their performance, and other stuff.

Justine: Hello Hello Hello… alright, the microphone’s on! No secrets! This is Justine and Tristan, with Hutch from the Thermals, and we’re recording for MercurialSound.com… this is much more official sounding than anything we’ve ever recorded.
Tristan: Outside at Bumbershoot.
Justine: The Thermals have just released their newest album, “The Body, the Blood, the Machine,” came out a week and a half ago?
Tristan: On SubPop records
Hutch: yes
Justine: And it is great. We love it.

Fireflies and Superstrings: A Conversation with Johanna Kunin

Posted on September 3rd, 2006 by Levi in Interviews

JKThe first time I saw local singer-songwriter Johanna Kunin (performing Monday at 12:45 on the NW Court Stage at Bumbershoot, as well as September 21st at Ground Zero) was in early 2005 at the sadly defunct Punkin House. Actually, I didn’t really see her at all, so much as hear her; the house was so crowded I had to sit in a different room around a corner from where she was playing. Regardless, I could hear her lovely songs and see the way she captivated the audience. Since then, I’ve been lucky enough to share a stage with her a couple times, and she’s been kind enough to contribute 2 songs to my Ball of Wax quarterly compilations. Her performances just keep getting more compelling [interesting...

Interview with Patterson Hood of Drive-By Truckers

Posted on June 9th, 2006 by Tristan in Interviews

dbt

The Drive-By Truckers might be the most relevant band recording music today. Their albums fit nicely into the three-guitar Southern rock tradition, while simultaneously pushing the boundaries of American music. Primary lead-singer Patterson Hood has been writing socially interested lyrics for years; while their sound has moved from country-rock to hard-rock, and now careens into a beautiful soul-territory. Their newest album, “A Blessing and a Curse,” was released April 18, 2006 on New West Records.

I exchanged questions through e-mail with Hood recently, just as they arrive in town for a show with Black...

Interview w/ John & Braydn of The Lonely Forest

Posted on May 12th, 2006 by Justine-Marie in Interviews

For all the media-hungry fans of John van Deusen and the Lonely Forest, I’ve got some fabulous video files! Ashley and I snuck up to Anacortes in February to get in on some pre-SoundOff! band practice, and here’s what we’ve got. Warning: the files are huge. Don’t even think about downloading them without broadband - your computer will hate you. For best results, rightclick the link and select “save target as” or “save link as.” Anyways, on to Anacortes and Braydn’s garage…

Tristan - Yeah, here we go, I think it’s recording now. I have to transcribe all of this after. This is myself talking. Alright it’s recording. So my first question is: Dave, Josh of Boat, I’ll introduce you

Dave - Hi, Dave.

Josh - Josh says hello.

Tristan- So what do you play, Dave?

Dave - I play the guitar/keyboard and vocals

Josh - And I Josh play the drums and sometimes keyboards, but not on recording.

Tristan - Alright, question: who does the whistling?

Josh - Dave, he does it with his teeth, it’s crazy, show ‘em.

(Dave whistles)

Tristan - It’s some excellent whistling on the album. Yeah it really stands out. Yeah, so the name Boat where did you get that name? What are its origins?

Dave - Its origins are that in Chicago I had this roommate and we...

Rachel: Well, I’m about to play a show, in about… an hour. That pretty much is next as it goes right now. But I’m writing our new record and we’re gonna be working on that throughout the winter and then going on tour as much as possible in 2006 so new everything.

Justine: For the second time, the Mon Frere Interview! Umm…. you guys went touring, this summer. How’d that go? Applesauce…

Interview 9/5 with Idiot Pilot

Posted on October 12th, 2005 by Alisa in Interviews

(c) Morgan Keuler, of course! This is the Idiot Pilot interview part two, with both men… It is a rarity these days that you find well spoken people, but that is not the case with Idiot Pilot. Michael Harris and Daniel Anderson have to be two of the most well spoken individuals I have ever had the privilege to talk to. They know exactly what they want to say and how to say it. Yeah, the interview took a while, but through all of us moving to college, a computer crash, and general chaos, it’s here!

Want to Listen Yourself?
Download it![mp3, 14.6MB]

Alisa: How did you spend your time off?

Michael: I’ve been, lets see, playing a lot of video games. Tiger Woods PGA, I’ve gone bowling a few times but not as much...

Interview 7/24 with Daniel of Idiot Pilot

Posted on August 1st, 2005 by Alisa in Interviews

It never ceases to amaze me how wonderfully gracious our local bands are. I was extremely excited that I had the opportunity to interview Idiot Pilot, but unfortunately Michael was unable to be there. Still, I didn’t email them before the show, but being the nice guys they are, Daniel stuck around and made some time for a brief interview:

Daniel: I feel really hyper

Alisa: Yea, you guys played a really good show.

Daniel: Thank you

Alisa: So how is the tour going?

Daniel: Very, very well, Alisa. I think that we’re gonna do a really big video thing, we’ve been taking a lot of video so we’re gonna edit it together into a series of different parts and post it on our website.

Alisa: I saw your one video you posted about a month ago, you guys playing D&D in the van.

Daniel: Yeah, yeah...

Interview 5/27 with The Cops

Posted on May 28th, 2005 by Justine-Marie in Interviews

Alec-Rene with The CopsIt never ceases to amaze me how nice people in bands can be. The Cops, though, have topped the list. For the first time in our lives, Alec-Rene and I were guest-listed. Yeah, thats right, they put us on the guest list ’cause we were coming to interview them. Pretty sweet, eh? Thanks guys! Anyways, we had a very cheery/zany interview. It took a while to get fully grouped and seated, so by the time we started actually interviewing, we felt at ease in our conversation. Here goes:

Alec-Rene: Get Good or Stay Bad comes out in October. Tell us about it.

Mike: Thats the plan, yeah…
Dave: How do you know the title of our record?!
John: From our website…
*Justine-Marie cracks up
Dave: Shows you what we know..
*Everyone cracks up
Mike: I thought you liked the new website…
