Interview 4/29 with Schoolyard Heroes

Posted on April 30th, 2005 by Justine-Marie in Interviews

The band. Image off their website.I found my way into a booth last night with local heroes, Schoolyard Heroes. I unfortunately left my official list of questions in the car, but I think things went okay. My sister, coming for her second SYH show, interrupted us at the very beginning with her new purchase of the new vinyl 7” just realeased by them, but that provided a nice segway into the beginning of our interview.

Justine-Marie: So why did you guys decide to go vinyl?

Jonah: Umm… I dunno, its something a lot of our favorite bands have done and stuff like that. It’s cool, its a different medium…

Ryann: and to try to keep it alive

Jonah: But we also recognize that a lot of people don’t have a record...

Interview 4/24 Weston of Eisley

Posted on April 28th, 2005 by tofutod in Interviews

After what could only be described as a record-breaking show, I got a little time alone with Eisley’s drummer, Weston DuPree. He even let me ask him a few questions.

How has this tour with New Found Glory and Reggie and the Full Effect been in comparison to the other tours you’ve been on?
“It’s been pretty good. We’ve only been on 3 or 4 tours before. We toured with Coldplay, Brand New, Snow Patrol, and the Elected.”

How long until the next album?
“I don’t know, we haven’t really been working on any new stuff.”

So, even though you guys are classified as Christian music, I’ve noticed there isn’t a lot of direct references to God. Is there any reason you guys haven’t gone ‘full-fledged’?
“I guess there are reasons. We’re all Christians. The Christian music market is so fake and we know that because we’ve experienced...

Tegan and Sara 4/24 @ Neumo’s

Posted on April 26th, 2005 by K-Tron in Reviews

(c) Morgan KeulerUpon arriving at Neumo’s I laid eyes on a multitude of females. I can’t say I didn’t expect it. While waiting for the opening band to start setting up, I purchased a Tegan and Sara pin. Still waiting, I got a drink and stood leaning against the corner wall near the bar. Then I stepped out to the middle of the floor and waited for the band to begin setting up.

Five minutes later; still waiting.

Ten minutes; still waiting.

Twenty minutes; STILL waiting.

Finally, after what seemed like forever, the opening band took the stage. At first glance, The Long Ranger didn’t seem like much. Their instruments consisted of an electric guitar and an Apple laptop computer. Once the music started, however, my ears were treated with a techno-rock sound that isn’t comparable...

Antony & The Johnsons 4/23 @ Behnke Center for Contemporary Performance

Posted on April 24th, 2005 by Zach Hale in Reviews

The show was absolutely incredible, better than any show I have ever been to hands down. The amazing quadruple bill of never-ending incredible music was astounding throughout and left me in awe afterwards. It’s amazing this show wasn’t advertised more because the line-up was incredible.

I should say, I had never even heard of, let alone been to the Behnke Center for Contemporary Performance. It was a smaller, sit-down venue that focuses more broadly in the arts with acts of all types including not only musical acts but lectures and artistic performances. After the whole performance it was kinda hard to keep sitting down, but I managed to get through the night just fine.

The first artist on the bill was Devendra Banhart. I hadn’t really been exposed...

Straylight Run 4/15 El Corazon

Posted on April 17th, 2005 by Alisa in Reviews

My only intentions Friday night were to clean my house, sit in my favorite chair and maybe nap. But my plans were soon changed when my best friend (Eric) from Olympia showed up at my doorstep with two tickets to the Straylight Run show. I soon found myself sitting in the passenger seat of Eric’s truck headed toward El Corazon.

After standing in the rain for about an hour, we finally got inside with some feeling left in our fingers and toes. The show started promptly at 9:00 with Spitalfield opening. While they played their 15 minute set, all I could do was think about their name and try to nurse my various appendages back to a healthy temperature.

During my recovery, the second band, The Honorary Title, began their set...

underOATH 4/11 El Corazon

Posted on April 15th, 2005 by Alec-Rene in Reviews

After a long monday of coming back to school after spring break, I made the decision to head down to Seattle to go see the underOATH show. Which, in the end, it turns out it was not too bad of a decision. I was very tired and reluctant to go to a concert but my friends wanted me to go to this concert with them… and I caved to peer pressure. Which on hindsight was not a bad decision at all.

The line for the show was AMAZINGLY long. I wasn’t really expecting a long line… especially since I was pretty early for the show. When I got inside everywhere I went was totally packed. Not enough room to get from one side to the other. And amazingly everyone seemed to be excited about a different band. Each group had it’s own cult following that came.

The opening band was Fear Before the March of Flames. They played a very good set in...

Interview 4/6 with The Divorce

Posted on April 8th, 2005 by Justine-Marie in Interviews

(c) Morgan Keuler 2005The Mercurial Sound team were certainly in full force at Wednesday’s Louis XIV show. 7 people (friends included) made it down in our group there to the show, and while the concert itself was fantastic, alot happened after the after the show as well. We had to split up to cover all grounds. We all got a great photo with Jason from Louis XIV, whom Alisa and her friend Rachel chatted with until they were asked to leave for the bazillionth time. Alec and Justine also got a promised interview with local Schoolyard Heroes after their 4/29 show, so stay tuned for that interview at the end of the month (and of course come to that show for a great time). As for goodies for right now, Alec stepped...

Louis XIV 4/6 El Corazon (Graceland)

Posted on April 7th, 2005 by Alisa in Reviews

I saw them once but it wasn’t enough, I had to go back for seconds; Louis XIV is one of my favorite bands because they can put on a good show. After playing here only a month and a half ago, then opening for Hot Hot Heat, they were back, this time headlining their own show. And a good show is just what they played. All though the night started out shaky with me and my friend Rachel getting lost in Seattle (luckily, we checked out the venue early, concert tip: arrive early, just in case you get lost like us), it was all okay and forgotten by the time Louis XIV hit the stage.

Starting off,The Schoolyard Heroes opened and played a good set as always. The...

Enrique 4/1 Luca’s

Posted on April 1st, 2005 by Justine-Marie in Reviews

Once again, I have been foiled in my musical quests. I came down with a case of sick this week and missed school and, to my distraughtness, IQU’s show at The Vera. Luckily, my father decided to take my mother, sister and I out to dinner at one of my favorite restaurants where we were charmed by the delightful audio musings of Enrique.

Now, this was certainly not the electronic theremin thing I had been planning on, nor really anything else you might expect from Mercurial Sound, but if you ever get the chance to see Enrique play, go see him. I’ve seen him several times before, and each is fun. He plays in restaurants around the area, and if you read that article I linked above, he’s got the skills and has played for random people such as President Bush Sr. His hands glide across the guitar. I’m not a guitar expert, of course, but...
